Check whether a password is needed to open the PDF

An opening password encrypts access to document contents. You need the correct password from the document creator or issuer. A PDF can also open normally while restricting printing or editing. These are different situations: if it opens without a password, try the unlock tool with its password field empty. Forgotten opening passwords cannot be recovered here.

Choose the PDF and enter its password

Open Unlock PDF, choose your document and enter the password that opens it. Spaces and capitalization matter. Choose Unlock PDF to create a decrypted copy. The original is not overwritten. Standard password-encrypted PDFs are supported; certificate-based encryption, password-protected Word and Excel documents are not.

Keep a bank statement or invoice on your device

The PDF engine and its WebAssembly code are bundled with the site and run in a separate browser worker. Your selected document and password are processed locally, without a file-upload endpoint. Normal website requests reach the hosting provider. Use a trusted browser and device; extensions and password-manager behavior are outside the site’s control.

Download and check the unlocked copy

Download the PDF, close its viewer and open the downloaded copy again to confirm it no longer asks for a password. Check all pages, selectable text, amounts, dates, form fields and links. Unlocking rewrites PDF storage without turning pages into screenshots. Rewriting invalidates certificate-based digital signatures, so retain a signed original when the signature matters.

Fix a wrong password or unsupported file

A missing or incorrect password produces an error and no download. Retype the issuer-provided password carefully. If the file is damaged or uses unsupported encryption, obtain a fresh copy or use an application that supports it. Files up to 100 MB can be selected, but available device memory can require a smaller PDF. Cancel stops the worker; there is no server fallback.

Continue with an unlocked PDF

Once you have checked the output, continue to Merge PDF or Compress PDF in the same tab. PDF to Word and PDF to Excel use selectable text; removing encryption does not add OCR to scanned pages or recreate an original Word or spreadsheet layout.

Choose the right next step

The password requirement depends on how the PDF is protected.
Your documentWhat to enterWhat to expect
PDF asks for a password to openThe correct opening passwordAn unlocked copy if the encryption is supported
PDF opens but restricts printing or editingTry leaving the field blankRestrictions can be removed from a decrypted copy
Opening password is forgottenAsk the document issuer for accessNo password recovery or guessing is provided

Keep the original and review the downloaded copy. Unlocked copies no longer have password protection.
