Your paperwork stays your business.

Your document stays on your device.
Compare on-device processing with a service that uploads documents for server-side processing. Individual providers have different policies; this table describes processing models, not a security audit of a brand.

| What to check | WaterPDF · On your device | Upload-based processing |
|---|---|---|
| Document contents on the network | Selected document contents stay in this browser tab. Processing does not upload them. | Document contents are sent to a service for server-side processing. |
| Where the work happens | Your browser uses your device’s CPU and memory to process the document. | The provider’s processing infrastructure performs the document task. |
| Service-side document retention | WaterPDF does not receive an uploaded document to store. Downloads stay wherever your browser saves them. | Check the provider’s retention, deletion and account-storage policies. |
| Resource and file limits | Your available device memory and each tool’s file, page and processing limits apply. | Provider quotas, upload limits and processing limits apply; your browser still needs resources. |
| Internet and website requests | The site, code and selected OCR language assets load from hosting. Local processing is not a promise of offline use. | The website and document upload need a network connection to the processing service. |
Ordinary page and asset requests still reach the hosting provider. Use a trusted device: local processing does not protect against a compromised browser or extension.

How to password protect a PDF without uploading it
Add an opening password to a PDF on your device, keep the original and check the protected copy. What encryption does, and what it does not.
Read the guide →How to remove a PDF password without uploading your file
Remove a PDF password on your device with the correct password, or remove printing and editing restrictions, then check the unlocked copy.
Read the guide →Aadhaar PDF password: the format, and how to open or remove it
The e-Aadhaar PDF password is the first four letters of your name in capitals plus your birth year. Open it and save an unlocked copy without uploading it.
Read the guide →A few good questions.
Do you upload my files?
No. Processing happens on your device. The site loads its own code and assets, but does not send your selected documents to an application server.
Can I use WaterPDF on my phone?
Yes. Use a current browser on a phone, tablet or computer. File size and available memory affect what your device can process.
Are all tools free?
Every tool in this release is free and does not require an account.
How large can my PDF be?
Most PDF tools accept up to 300 MB per file, with 600 MB total for merging. Compare PDFs accepts up to 150 MB and 100 pages per document; OCR accepts up to 50 pages. Device memory can impose lower limits. Check the limits shown in your chosen tool.
What does compression change?
Standard compression preserves text and artwork. Optional stronger image compression rebuilds pages as pictures and removes text search, forms and links. The app explains this before you choose it.
Does WaterPDF offer secure redaction or password protection?
Both. Redact PDF blacks out words and numbers so the text is removed from the file, and checks that it is gone. Protect PDF adds an opening password with AES-256 encryption on your device; printing and copying remain available after opening. Cropping and visible overlays do not securely remove information.
Can I convert PDF to Word?
Yes. Convert selectable PDF text to an editable DOCX, or keep pages as pictures. For a scan, run OCR PDF first to add recognized text, then continue to PDF to Word. Word to PDF creates a simplified, reflowed layout from DOCX. Complex layouts and OCR results need review.
