What is the e-Aadhaar PDF password?
The e-Aadhaar PDF downloaded from UIDAI is password protected. The password has eight characters: the first four letters of your name exactly as printed on the Aadhaar, in capital letters, followed by your year of birth as four digits. For SURESH KUMAR born in 1990, the password is SURE1990. You cannot choose or change this password.
Names with spaces, initials or fewer than four letters
Spaces are skipped, so SAI KUMAR becomes SAIK1990. A dot in an initial counts as a character, so P. KUMAR becomes P.KU1990. Spaces are skipped across the whole name too, so RIA SHARMA becomes RIAS1990; only a name that is just RIA uses three letters, RIA1990. Use the year of birth, not the full date of birth and not your age.
Open the Aadhaar PDF
Any PDF reader asks for the password when you open the file. Type it in capital letters with no spaces. If it fails, check the spelling of your name on the Aadhaar itself, because the password follows that spelling, including initials and dots.
Remove the password without uploading your Aadhaar

Keep the unlocked copy safe
UIDAI protects the file because it contains your Aadhaar number, address and photo. Store an unlocked copy only on your own device, delete copies you no longer need, and share it only where it is required. Where a service accepts it, a masked Aadhaar, which hides most of the Aadhaar number, shares less. You can add your own password again later with Protect PDF.
Make an Aadhaar JPG or fit an upload limit
Some forms ask for the Aadhaar as an image or under a size limit. After unlocking, use PDF to JPG to save the pages as pictures, or Compress PDF with a size limit such as 100 KB or 200 KB. Check that the text on the result is still readable before uploading it.
